Electric bike maker VanMoof recently raised $ 128 million in funding. And the company is already using some of that money to develop a brand new product – the VanMoof V. This is a new product in the VanMoof line, a high speed bike.
The VanMoof V is not yet available. Instead, the company teased the new bike in a live YouTube video. The company plans to launch the VanMoof V by the end of 2022. It is expected to cost around $ 3,598, ⬠3,498 or £ 2,998 according to the VanMoof website landing pages.
What you get for that price is an electric bike with two motors – one in the front wheel and one in the rear wheel. There are two suspension systems at the front and rear of the vehicle to help you on uneven streets. The VanMoof V is also fitted with thick tires for added safety.
According to the YouTube video, the bike can reach a top speed of 60 km / h (37 mph). But if you already own an electric bicycle, you know that there are regulations when it comes to power assist for bicycles. In Europe, an electric bicycle cannot go faster than 25 km / h (15.5 mph). In the United States, this limitation depends on each state but remains lower than the maximum speed of the VanMoof V.
That doesn’t mean you can’t go faster than that. This means that the engine will stop assisting you if you reach the top speed for your jurisdiction. The company already says the VanMoof V won’t help you break the law.
âWhen we started to imagine what the V could become, we quickly recognized that this was a whole new approach to the way we use the roads. The VanMoof V will have built-in speed settings to match your country’s regulations. However, this bike has the technology and the ability to reach speeds of up to 60 kilometers per hour or 37 miles per hour. As it is, local regulations around the world limit the maximum speed in this category. But in the long run, we need a lot more thinking, âVanMoof co-founder and CEO Ties Carlier said during the announcement.
âIn our view, the current policy limits the adoption of this type of transport. We are asking for policies designed for people rather than cars. That is why we will work with city authorities to explore geolocation and push for modernized speed regulations, âhe added.
In other words, the VanMoof V should be seen as a concept bike to share VanMoof’s vision, as well as a lobbying vehicle for policy makers around the world. The company had to share its plans in advance because it is not necessary to have a two-wheel drive to reach 25 km / h.
That said, VanMoof does send out invitations to a group of VanMoof clients and crowdfunders. These invitations allow you to reserve a VanMoof V with a $ 20 reservation deposit. Reservations begin today with a potential release date of late 2022.
