Road conditions, snow emergencies and closures

CLEVELAND (WJW) — FOX 8’s weather crew is accumulating lingering snow showers on Friday, but most of the day will be spent cleaning and digging.

the Ohio Department of Transportation says a big challenge was the blowing snow.

We keep you informed with live updates on snow emergencies, road conditions, closures and how this storm may affect you in the blog below.

9:40 a.m.

The RUMPKE Garbage Department has advised the City of Broadview Heights that garbage will not be picked up for the remainder of the week. Garbage collection will resume on the scheduled day next week.

9:30 a.m.

RTA reports that it continues to experience delays for buses, rail and paratransit.

9:20 a.m.

The right lane is blocked on I-90/SR-2 West at E 72nd St, due to a disabled vehicle.

8:45 am

  • Holmes County has been downgraded to a Level 2 snow emergency. See the list here.
  • The right lane is blocked on I-90 East at I-90, due to an accident.

8:30 am

  • ODOT reports that 1,300 crews remain on the road.
  • The Akron Zoo is closed today, February 4, due to winter weather conditions.


  • RTA reports up to 30 minutes late on the Red Line, the entire line.
  • Due to bad weather, there will be no sanitary pick-up in Guangzhou on Friday February 4th. Pickups will be delayed one day and will be picked up on Saturday February 5th.

7:45 am

Lake Metroparks park buildings will be closed on Friday. Staff will work to clear the parking lots. The parks will be open.

7:30 a.m.

  • Schools in the town of Lorain will be closed on Friday.
  • The Rocky River garbage collection on Friday will be rescheduled to Saturday, February 5.
  • FirstEnergy reports that only 7 customers are without power.

7:15 a.m.

The winter storm warning expired at 7 a.m. A winter weather advisory is in effect for most of northeast Ohio until 12 p.m.

Crash reports:

  • The right lane is blocked on I-90 East at I-90, due to an accident.
  • The right lane is blocked on I-480 West past SR-94/State Rd to US-42/Ridge Rd, due to an accident.
  • Right 2 lanes blocked on I-480 East past SR-252/Great Northern Blvd to SR-17 To SR-237/Grayton Rd, due to accident.

6:55 a.m.

  • FirstEnergy reports less than 2 dozen people without power.
  • The Medina Co. sheriff says the area will remain at a Level 2 snow emergency after consulting with road crews. Check out the list here.

6:35 a.m.

The Cleveland Museum of Art is delaying its opening until noon today, Friday, February 4, due to inclement weather.

6:30 a.m.

The website Aware of the theft says there are 4 delays Friday at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport and 56 cancellations.

6:15 a.m.

Greater Cleveland RTA advises that due to road conditions, buses, trains and paratransit are experiencing delays. HealthLine 11, 14 and 15 will be redirected. You can call (216) 621-9500 for updates.

FOX 8 crews saw blocked buses earlier this morning.

6 a.m.

  • Rumpke in Westlake has canceled garbage/recycling pickup for Friday routes due to poor weather conditions.
  • ODOT reports that 1,300 crews are working to clear roads across the state.



FOX 8 crews saw a tractor-trailer stuck on the highway in Lorain. FOX 8 crews say the ramps are in poor condition.

5:15 a.m.

Snow totals so far:


Erie County is under a Level 3 snow emergency. Departmental offices will be closed.


FOX 8 crews found several RTA buses stuck in downtown Cleveland. RTA is not reporting any delays at this time.

  • Fewer than 500 FirstEnergy customers are without power Friday morning.
  • Lake County Recorder is closed Friday.
  • Municipal courts in Garfield Heights will also be closed.
