Crazy week of playoffs to come | Columns / Blogs

Well, it’s a crazy playoff week this week because pretty much everyone is starting the playoffs.

The Gobbler football team faced Pequot Lakes on October 26 and a victory there would put the locals in the semi-final on October 30 at home against the winner of Hibbing-Two Harbors at 2pm. Aitkin beat both teams earlier in the season, edging Agates 22-14 and last week crushing Hibbing 54-20. It was a nice rebound victory for Aitkin and they should be ready for the playoffs. Two more wins and they will likely face seeded Esko again in the Section 7AAA title match at Duluth. Meanwhile, the Hill City-Northland Storm, the No. 2 seed in the nine-man Section 7A, faced Silver Bay in the first round on October 26 and a win would put them in the home semifinals against the winner of Cherry, Seed # 3 and North Central, Seed # 6. It would be a 2 p.m. start on October 30.

The McGregor Mercs play in Section 5 with nine players and that section has just four teams this season, so the Mercs, No.4, play seeded Ogilvie on October 30 at 2 p.m. in the semifinals.

Volleyball is also getting things going this week and the Aitkin Gobblers, No. 6 seed in Section 2 of Section 7AA, will travel to No. 3 Eveleth-Gilbert on October 27 at 7 p.m. The two teams haven’t met in the regular season and have opposing records with the Golden Bears at 15-7 and the Gobblers at 7-15. The Hill City Hornets volleyball team finished 16-7 this season and will start the Section 5A game on Oct. 29 at 7 p.m. at home against Northland. McGregor is at Pine River-Backus, same time, same date.
