Rushing to the roses

Tavion Thomas times two.

The Utah running back’s second score of the game reminds Utes fans of the Rose Bowl. With 10:21 a.m. to go, it’s Utah 38, Oregon 3.

Rise while running

TJ Pledger’s 4-yard touchdown gives Utah a 29-3 lead with 6:33 left in the third quarter.

But give Cam Rising – and Rising’s legs – a lot of credit here. On a designed run, the QB pulled off a 41-yard gain to prepare Utah for what could be a punch.

Rising then scored on the 2-point conversion, another run for the quarterback, to make it a 31-3 game.

(Leah Hogsten | The Salt Lake Tribune) Utah Utes quarterback Cameron Rising (7) throws a pass as the Utes face the Oregon Ducks for the 2021 Pac12 Football Championship title at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas , December 3, 2021.

Oregon Joins Board of Directors

The Ducks made their first dent in Utah’s lead. A field goal brings the score to 23-3 with 10:32 left in the third quarter.

Halftime: Utah 23, Oregon 0

Seeking to make something, anything, happen for the Ducks offensively, Oregon quarterback Anthony Brown jumped to the sideline and threw himself into traffic. The interception, seconds from the end of the half, gave the Utes a 23-0 chance at the break.

Rising finds Kincaid: Utah 20, Oregon 0

It looked like Kayvon Thibodeaux of Oregon had finally made his mark. The star defensive lineman broke through Utah pass protection and sent Rising back, out of the range.

Rising responded right away with a 29-yard strike down mid-end Dalton Kincaid in the 3rd and 14th. Moments later, Rising and Kincaid reconnected, this time for the Utes’ third touchdown.

After a failed snap on the PAT, the score was 20-0 a few seconds before half-time.

Noah Sewell intercepts Cam Rising

The Utah high school football star appeared to have given the Ducks the spark they were looking for. Sewell ended a promising Utah practice by knocking out Rising, the Utes’ first turnover of the game.

But the Ducks missed a 43-yard field goal attempt, hooking the left kick to keep the score 14-0 in the second quarter.

Devin Lloyd pick-six gives Utes 14-0 lead

Winning a conference championship is exactly why star linebacker Devin Lloyd returned to Utah for one last season.

And the Butkus Prize finalist was very important to the early Utes.

The linebacker read the eyes of Oregon quarterback Anthony Brown, intercepted the pass and ran for a touchdown to give Utah a 14-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Utes strikes first

Tavion Thomas has just entered the end zone, unscathed on a 2-yard run, for the game’s first score.

Utah extended their opening practice by converting the 4th and 1 of their own 48s. The touchdown was then set up by a pass interference call into the end zone on the 3rd and 12th.

Utah leads 7-0 early in the first quarter.

A divided family

(Gabe Sewell) Gabe and Arlene Sewell had custom soccer jerseys and shoes made for the Pac-12 game between Utah and Oregon on November 20, 2021, when two of their sons were playing one against the other. Nephi Sewell, their third oldest of five, plays the Utes linebacker role. Younger Noah Sewell plays Ducks linebacker.

Gabe Sewell knows his son is going to win tonight.

He also knows his son will lose.

Brothers Nephi Sewell and Noah Sewell will face off tonight, helping to anchor Utah and Oregon defenses.
