BLOG: Every climate initiative needs to be road tested in the developing world – and adequate funding is essential

SINGAPORE (ICIS) – Click here to view the latest blog post on Asian Chemical Connections by John Richardson.

Until every initiative on climate change and plastic waste has been road tested in the developing world, we are not going anywhere. Data on petrochemicals, transportation fuels, and electricity demand tell us that we are going back.

We also need, of course, to ensure that the developing world has enough money to decarbonize and reduce open plastic waste.

What was already a huge bill has been made even bigger by the pandemic. The bill can only be covered by a global carbon tax.

However, we are making progress thanks, for example, to the carbon border adjustment mechanism proposed by the EU.

But we must begin by recognizing that the developing world must be at the forefront and center of every discussion and initiative.

And again – as today’s blog post reminds us – we need to be data driven. All the data tell us that the challenges are greatest in the developing world.
