This is the live blog from the San Francisco 49ers vs Los Angeles Chargers Week 2 preseason game. I will update this frequently with information and analysis from my salon.
2:15 Quarterbacks, I’m curious to see if the 49ers will allow Jimmy Garoppolo to pitch the pitch and risk being intercepted as he has been intercepted a lot in practice recently. I think that’s why the 49ers didn’t let him pitch the pitch in the first preseason game. Now they could make him do more and defend his starting job.
I’m also curious to see if the 49ers will allow Trey Lance to come out of his pocket under pressure. Last week it seemed like either the 49ers wanted him to show he could pull it off in the pocket or he wanted to show the 49ers. Either way, he’ll be at his best when throwing from the perimeter. Will the 49ers allow him to be at his best?
2:20 On the defense, I’m curious to see who starts against Jason Verrett at the cornerback position. Emmanuel Moseley came out with a hamstring injury, and his replacement will most likely be one of the rookies – Ambry Thomas or Deommodore Lenoir. Does either player sound good enough to start? Or do the 49ers have a major problem around the corner?
I’m also interested to see if the 49ers’ offensive line has improved from last week, when Lance was sacked four times. There’s no way it could get any worse, right?
4:02 The following 49ers won’t play tonight: Azeez Al-Shaair, Aaron Banks, Nick Bosa, Shon Coleman, Dee Ford, Jalen Hurd, Jauan Jennings, Javon Kinlaw, George Kittle, Alex Mack, Elijah Mitchell, Emmanuel Moseley, Raheem Mostert, Trey Sermon, Jason Verrett, Jimmie Ward, Fred Warner, K’Waun Williams, Trent Williams and Tavon Wilson.
Here are the starters who will be playing: Jimmy Garoppolo, Deebo Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk, Laken Tomlinson, Daniel Brunskill, Mike McGlinchey, Kyle Juszczyk, DJ Jones, Arik Armstead and Dre Greenlaw.
4:14 Sermon came out with a minor ankle injury and Jennings came out with a minor heel injury, according to the team.
4:34 Jimmy Garoppolo will play the first set, Trey Lance will play the next two sets, and then Garoppolo will return to the match. I am not joking. John Lynch just said it on KPIX.
4:37 The Chargers will receive the opening kickoff.
4:44 At 2nd and 3rd on Chargers 44, Arik Armstead leaves Easton Stick bootleg around him, but Armstead chases him from behind for the sack. Next play, 3rd and 5th, Deommodore Lenoir breaks a short loop in the middle while playing area cover. Good game. James returns the 10-yard punt to the 49ers 16.
4:57 In 3rd and 12th on Chargers 34, Jimmy Garoppolo passes a pass over the header of Brandon Aiyuk, who leaps and returns the ball to a Chargers defender who recovers the pass. Bad throw. That’s what happens at training camp when the 49ers let him throw more than 10 yards into the field.
5:12 On the 3rd and 13th of the Chargers 32, Easton Stick tries to squeeze through the middle of the 49ers’ defensive line, and Samson Ebukam chases him from behind for the sack. That’s what he will bring to the team.
5:13 Trey Lance’s turn.
5:20. On the 1st and 10 of 43, he struggles with the pressure and throws the ball away. On the 3rd and 8th, he throws a pass that rocks the line of scrimmage and flies high and behind Deebo Samuel, who has walked a search route from right to left.
5:25 On the 3rd and 11th of 7th, defensive end Jordan Willis puts Stick in the end zone for safety. The 49ers’ offense will then get the ball.
49ers 2, chargers 0.
5:30 On the 3rd and 4th of the 49ers 20, Lance throws the ball as hard as he can at Sanu, it sails high, and Sanu points the ball to a Chargers defender who recovers it. Ouch. The 49ers have a quarterback problem.
5:36 At 1st and goal of 3rd, Stick rolls right and throws a touchdown pass to Josh Palmer. Amazing how the Chargers can pull Stick out of the pocket and the 49ers can’t do that with Lance.
49ers 2, chargers 7.
5:39 Lance is still there.
5:42 At the 3rd and 5th of the 49ers 30, Lance rushes to his right, but stops to throw instead of running and gets kicked out. He still hasn’t raced once in the preseason. Weird.
5:56 At 2nd and 2nd of the 23 49ers, Zach Kerr hits Stick, who tries to throw the ball and is flagged for an intentional stranding. Kerr is having a good game.
5:57 Michael Badgley hits a field goal from 50 yards.
49ers 2, chargers 10.
6:05 At 2nd and 2nd on Chargers 6, Lance throws a touchdown pass to Mohamed Sanu, who ran sideways.
6:05 The 49ers want two and Lance rushes into the end zone, but that doesn’t count as Jaylon Moore committed a detention penalty. The 49ers therefore give the extra point instead. And Robbie Gould misses him. This is the second extra point he missed in two preseason games.
49ers 8, chargers 10.
6:26 On the 1st and 10th, Lance was sacked. Richie James was open in the apartment. On the 2nd and 16th, James dropped a pass. And in the 3rd and 16th, Wayne Gallman for 11 yards. Then the 49ers kicked.
6:31 In 3rd and 8th on Chargers 22, Chase Daniel knocked down a receiver in the field, then the Chargers punt.
